You’re No. 1 – treat yourself that way

Although the most important person in anyone’s life is himself, people are generally kinder to others than they are to themselves. We’ve been so programmed to feel we’re selfish if we put ourselves above others that we find it difficult even to put ourselves on the same level

Compare the way you’d treat yourself in certain instances to the way you’d treat a casual friend. Let’s say you’re entertaining guests in your home. If someone broke an irreplaceable crystal goblet, would you chastise him and tell him the financial and sentimental value he’s destroyed? Of course not. You would realize that he already felt bad enough, and you’d attempt to spare him further anguish.

Not so with yourself, however. You’d tell yourself how awkward you had been to drop the goblet in the first place. Then you’d throw in a little guilt for not having more consideration for a family heirloom.

Why do people treat themselves this way? Because of childhood programming that tells us we should feel terrible in particular circumstances, and breaking a goblet is one of them. The person who can shrug his shoulder and say, “That’s tough, but there’s nothing I can do about it now” is a rare creature. Chances are his parents never criticized him for spilled milk and the broken glass that went with it. That kind of parent is rare, too.

Some women are so used to buying all their clothes on sale that the idea of paying full price actually frightens them. How much better it’d be to treat themselves the same as they treat their family, without guilt and without regret.

How many people do you know who will eat as well alone as when they’re with someone else?

You are No. 1 in your own life. Why not treat yourself that way?
